Dark Void
Dark Void Trailer - published by Capcom USA, 2010
Dark Void was our first large project at Airtight Games. I was the art, cinematics and animation director.
The only way I could pull this off was to have an amazing team of artists, tech artists, and animators who did everything in their power to get things done with excellence.

Story and art development
From the beginning we knew the game was going to be a story driven, 3rd person game with jet pack flying and aerial combat.
The visuals evolved out of the story development. Our main character, Will Grey, a WW 2 cargo pilot, gets caught flying through the Bermuda Triangle and transported to a parallel world called The Void where a race of aliens called the Watchers has been manipulating human evolution from the beginning of time. The Watchers were cut off from humanity at a certain point by a human rebellion and are now on the verge of creating portals back to Earth for a violent invasion.
Will discovers several colonies of humans who were either bred by the Watchers as slaves or accidentally blundered into the Void through the Triangle. A small group of Survivors, led by Nicola Tesla, have built an array of retro sci-fi weapons and ships and are preparing to assault the Watchers and thwart their plans to control humanity.
The art direction challenge was to create a world that was consistent with a 1940's era as well as the high tech of a much more technologically advanced civilization.

The world had to support the ability to quickly fly from a micro level at one minute to a distant macro level at the next. It was one of the largest challenges for developing the art direction for the environments.
I specifically chose designs which hemmed players in while giving them large enough spaces to fly around in.
